Here in Northern Virginia, if a house was built at any time after George Washingtons second inauguration, we consider it new construction.

Well that might be a slight exaggeration, but we certainly do treasure our historic homes. Even if we dont happen to live in one, we can certainly enjoy the timeless atmosphere along with a tasty meal at one of our areas historic bed-and-breakfasts. Alexandria On the Potomac
Arch Hall Estate

Built in 1796, this may be the most historic home of all. It was occupied by George Washingtons nephew Lawrence Lewis and his wife, Nellie Custis, who was also Mrs. Washingtons granddaughter. The 10-acre estate is located on Belmont Bay. It features nine original wood-burning fireplaces, formal gardens, antique furnishings and five guest rooms, including three with private baths. The continental breakfast can be served in the breakfast room, dining room or garden, and the room rate also includes afternoon tea. Smoking is not allowed. Call for policies on children. Alexandria/Old Town
Captain McGuires House

Dating back to 1816, this townhouse features antique furnishings. Both of the guest bedrooms include private baths. The continental breakfast is served in the breakfast/dining area. Smoking is not permitted and children are not invited. $95 to $195. 1-888-549-3415.

The Lee Retreat
Built in 1918, this townhouse features English antiques, a parlor with a gas fireplace and a formal dining room. Only one bed-and-breakfast room is available, which includes a private bath. The continental breakfast is served in a sunroom overlooking the patio and garden, which was featured on an Alexandria Garden Tour. Permission is needed to bring children under 13. Tree Top Retreat
Built in the 1800s, this house has one private apartment for guests in addition to the female ghost who reportedly frequently appears. She may show up to enjoy the continental breakfast or to repeat the house rules no smoking, no children. $150-$195 per night. 1-888-549-3415.

Peake-Fairfax House
Listed on the Alexandria Historic Registry, this 193-year-old townhouse is furnished with period antiques and a large collection of oil paintings. It also features a walled garden and eight original fireplaces, with one in each of the two guest rooms. They also boast modern private baths. Prince Royal House
Built in the 1700s, this townhouse features six working fireplaces plus antiques. A simple continental breakfast is provided. The walled garden leads to the one small guest bedroom, with a shower. Yesteryears Treasure House
This 1920 Craftsman-style home overlooks a magnolia tree in the front yard. The three guest rooms are located on the second floor, where one has a private bath and the other two share a hallway bath between them. The breakfast is continental. Guests must be over age 13. Arlington
Baileys House

Located in a designated historic neighborhood, this 1913 bungalow features screened front and back porches, a fireplace and antique furnishings. The bed-and-breakfast guest bedroom shares a bathroom. Stafford House

Norris House Inn
Built around 1760, this Southern Colonial home displays a British flag in honor of its owners native land. The six guest bedrooms have private baths. The Historic District of Old Town Manassas includes this turn-of-the-20th-century home. The two guest rooms are furnished with antiques and a brass or four-poster bed plus a full bath. Fresh flowers and cookies greet the new guests. In addition to the full country breakfast, afternoon tea plus wine and cheese are included. The house specialty is sausage with apples.
