The Alexandria-Mount Vernon Chapter of Jack and Jill of America held its 15th Biennial Beautillion Saturday night, celebrating The Pillars of Progressive Manhood: Stewardship, Scholarship, Civility and Integrity.
The Presentation Ball, held at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, is a tradition of the Alexandria-Mount Vernon chapter since 1983 and is designed to highlight the achievements of young men who are juniors and seniors in high school.
During six months of intensive preparation for the event, the young men attended a choral performance at the Kennedy Center, performed a community service project, attended a mother and son tea and etiquette luncheon, participated in a leadership and career planning workshop and attended a father and son sporting event. In addition, the Beaus received instruction in ballroom and choreographed dance that they demonstrated the night of their presentation.
Jack and Jill of America is a 70-year-old organization of 10,000 mothers and 30,000 family members headquartered in Washington that dedicates its resources to improving the quality of life of children. Officially chartered in 1966, the Alexandria-Mount Vernon chapter is committed to the collective cultural, social and educational development of children as well as service to the City of Alexandria, Fairfax County and the surrounding communities.
The 2009 Beaus were: Julian Bonds, son of LTC (R) Marcus Bonds and Kathy Flowers-Bonds and a junior at Bishop Denis OConnell High School; Brian Bracey, son of Scott M. and Regina J. Bracey and a junior at St. Stephens and St. Agnes; Alexander Edwards, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Edwards, Jr. and a junior at St. Stephens and St. Agnes; Jonathan McCants, son of Drs. Carl and Diann McCants and a senior at West Potomac High School; Dimitri Powell, son of Pastor Lawrence S. Powell and Donna V. Powell and a junior at Osbourn Park High School; Zeplyn Tillman, son of James and Deborah Tillman and a junior at St. Stephens and St. Agnes; and Nicholas Williams, son of Eric and Sonja Williams and a junior at St. Stephens and St. Agnes.
