Calvert-Jones Free Recycling Event for Used Electronics and Fluorescent Bulbs
On October 8, Calvert Jones Co., Inc., will offer computer users a unique opportunity to dispose of their obsolete computers, printers and other peripherals in an environmentally safe way at no charge as part of the companys Fluorescent Bulb Drop Off Day.
The quarterly event, which the company began a year ago as part of its effort to encourage Alexandria businesses and consumers to recycle hazardous fluorescent light bulbs safely, has been expanded to include out-of-date computers and printers, as well as used cell phones, items that would otherwise end up in already packed landfills presenting potential harm to the environment.
Used computer equipment, including monitors, keyboards, and printers, as well as fluorescent tubes, will be accepted at the Calvert Jones plant at 5703 Edsall Rd. between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on October 8. The Company will accept all tube lengths and sizes, including U-tubes, T-12s, T-10s, and T-8s. Cracked and broken bulbs cannot be accepted.
BB&T Re-Opens Old Town Financial Center with Charitable Donations
The Old Town branch of BB&Ts commercial division has just relocated from lower King Street to the third floor of the BB&T building at the corner of Washington and Duke Street. Between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, John Reiter, Senior Vice President, and the Alexandria Commercial Team invite the public to attend their Open House at 300 South Washington Street. The evening promises to provide charitable contributions in excess of $3,000 benefitting The Campagna Center and the Alexandria Red Cross.
Traffic Delays Possible Around Wilson Bridge Project
Travelers near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge from 9:00 p.m. Friday evening, October 3 through to 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening, October 4, should prepare for possible delays and new traffic patterns on the Beltways Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) between Route 1 and Telegraph Road. Lanes will be shifted and through traffic reduced from three lanes to one at times, but all entrance and exit ramps in the affected area will remain open. This lane reduction was originally scheduled for the weekend of September 26-27 but was postponed due to weather.
Construction activities will include moving the lanes of traffic to allow for future bridge construction related to the Telegraph Road Interchange, separating access to Telegraph Road North and South exits and changing out sign panels.
Specifically, motorists should be aware of the following changes:
New traffic pattern on the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) between Route 1 and Telegraph Road
The one combined exit for Telegraph Road North and South will be separated into two distinct exits
In the event of inclement weather, the work may be postponed to the weekend of October 10.

G.W. Receives Grant Money for After School Programs
Community Lodgings is proud to announce that it has received a coveted three-year grant of $325,980 from the Virginia Department of Educations 21st Century Community Learning Centers program. The Commonwealths program is designed to support academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The grant, made possible with funds from the No Child Left Behind Act, will be used by Community Lodgings to support an after-school program for disadvantaged George Washington Middle School students and their parents. The after-school program will be held at the organizations education facility, the Fifer Family Learning Center, which provides essential resources for the entire community.
This grant makes a remarkable difference in Community Lodgings ability to continue the quality programs we have established, says Executive Director Bonnie Baxley. Our staff and volunteers have worked diligently to provide each student the support needed to succeed. Now, with these funds, staff and volunteers will have the support they need.
Annual Dinner & Silent Auction to Benefit Animal Welfare League
The major fundraising event for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, the Annual Dinner & Silent Auction, will be held on Saturday, October 25, at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites, 625 First Street.
This event is a celebration of the bond between humans and their animal companions. The evening will be dedicated to a years worth of success stories made possible by the generosity of supporters and the dedication of volunteers and staff. This years theme, Somebody to Love, highlights the love between people and their companion animals.
A cocktail reception and silent auction bidding begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and presentations. Tickets are $75 per person. Parking is complimentary.
