The City of Alexandria announcedTuesday that it is calling for artists to produce art that will comprise theCharles Hamilton Houston Memorial, which will be located at the Charles HoustonRecreation Center at 901 Wythe St.
The purpose of the projectis to honor and memorialize Charles Houston and to recognize the historicalimportance of the former Parker-Gray High School, Alexandria’s firstAfrican-American high school. The project’s overarching theme is education andcivil rights.
The city will conduct thesearch for qualified applicants through a Request for Qualifications. Theanticipated installation date of the Charles Hamilton Houston Memorial is April2011.
Artists or design teamsinterested in applying to the RFQ are encouraged to register with the City ofAlexandria’s e-procure system at http://eprocure.alexandriava.gov/bso.Applications may be submitted online, by postal mail or in person. The deadlinefor applications is October 1 at 4 p.m. Three finalists will each receive anhonorarium of $2,000 to submit a complete proposal. Please refer to the RFQ forcomplete details.
