Each year, the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities puts the call out to individuals, business leaders and local schools for nominations for the John Duty Collins III Outstanding Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Award and the Gerry Bertier Scholarship.
The Outstanding Advocate award includes a $500 donation in the recipient’s name to an organization of the recipient’s choice. It would contribute to the promotion of equal opportunity for persons with disabilities within the City of Alexandria.
The Gerry Bertier Scholarship is awarded based on merit to a disabled city resident or to a student with a disability attending an Alexandria school. The scholarship was established in honor of and to recognize the accomplishments of GerryBertier, a T.C. Williams High School graduate who became severely disabled after he co-captained the Titans in their fabled 1971 football season.
