Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has appointed Councilwoman Alicia Hughes to his newly created Commission on Government Reform and Restructuring, his office announced last week.

The commission will work toward bold and innovative ideas to ensure that duplicative, outdated, unnecessary and ineffective services and their delivery methods are eliminated, according to a statement from the Office of the Governor. McDonnell said the commission will reserve previously wasted funds for core government services.

The appointment aligns with Hughes expressed desires to streamline government in general, a platform she ran on last year and one she exhibited most recently by voting against the Democrat-heavy city budget.

We must make government simpler and easier to use, more efficient and more effective, McDonnell said.

Meanwhile, Alexandria Delegate David Englin (D-45) both applauded and blasted McDonnell in a press release for his decision to make former Nixon administration member Fred Malek the commissions chairman. 

The commission is scheduled to have its first meeting within the next month and will complete its initial report to the by July 16 with a final report with recommendations by December 1.
