Three Episcopal High School students will attend the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes 2009 Holiday Lectures on Science this week in Chevy Chase, Md. Juniors Mark Herzog and Lanier Olsson and senior Jun Wu were nominated to represent EHS at the 2009 lectures, Exploring Biodiversity The Search for New Medicines.

The students selection was based on their performance in science classes and on their interest in science. The medical institute invites schools from all over the region to send a few chosen students to the lectures.

The lectures will be given by Bonnie L. Brassler, Ph.D., from Princeton, who studies how bacteria communicate with one another, and Baldomero M. Olivera, Ph.D., from the University of Utah, a neuroscientist whose work with venomous predatory cone snails has enabled his lab to produce a drug to help chronic pain patients.
