Shannon Gerlach, a fifth grade student at Mt. Vernon Community School became the new Alexandria City Public Schools Poet Laureate April 29. Gerlach earned the title after reading her poem, All Is Well, which is about abrupt changes in weather while on a hike, as part of an ACPS-wide poetry contest for students grades three through five.
