The Alexandria Fire Department will observe National Fire Prevention Week on Friday with a memorial service and wreath laying at 11 a.m.

The solemn ceremony is held each year at Ivy Hill Cemetery, 2823 King St., to honor those who have died in the line of duty and to mark the passing of its members who have died in the preceding 12 months. During 2009, there have been no deaths in the line of duty. However, two retired members of the department died during the past year.

A fire truck parked on each side of the cemeterys entrance will provide the framework from which a large American flag will be suspended to honor those who have died while protecting the general publics safety. Just outside of Old Town, Ivy Hills park-like setting offers a quiet place to reflect on the sacrifices made by firefighters throughout the history of the city.
