Alexandria hospital CEO elected to health care group

Christine M. Candio, CEO of Inova Alexandria Hospital, has been elected to serve on the Board of Governors of the American College of Healthcare Executives, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.

Candio began her role March 20 during the organization’s 53rd Congress on Healthcare Leadership in Chicago. She will serve a three-year term representing ACHE affiliates on its Board of Governors, the authority that oversees ACHE operations and member services.

“I am truly honored to be selected to this position with the American College of Healthcare Executives,” Candio said. “I believe in the vision of the organization to remain committed to excellence in healthcare management. This goal will benefit not only healthcare executives throughout the world but also the communities in which we deliver care.”

Police, fire and sheriff officials honored by Jaycees

The Alexandria Jaycees honored members of the city’s police force, sheriff’s department and fire department March 18 at City Hall for the community group’s annual awards program.

Matthew Struass, a paramedic for the Alexandria Fire and EMS Department, received the James E. Shortt Award. Strauss was honored for his efforts in establishing a Muscular Dystrophy fundraiser, “Fill the Boot,” which raised more than $5,000. The award is named for the late deputy fire marshal. 

Felicia Mensah, sergeant-designate with the Alexandria Sheriff’s Department, received the William G. Truesdale Award for her volunteer efforts with a Carpenter’s Shelter clothing drive and the Susan G. Komen annual breast cancer walk. The award is named for the late Alexandria deputy who was killed in the line of duty. 

Crime analysts Joe Ryan, Carolyn Cassidy and Matt Smith of the Alexandria Police Department received the Charles W. Hill Award for mentoring city youth through a city-sponsored program. However, they continue to mentor the children now that the program is over, according to an APD spokesman.
