The Big Screen came to a Lee Center stage last week, courtesy of youngsters attending this years Therapeutic Recreation summer camps.

The Teeny Weenie Toddlers, ages 3-5, performed tunes from Barney. The Kaleidoscope campers, ages 6-12, dazzled the audience with songs from The Lion King, Hercules and The Little Mermaid and Teen Scene campers spoofed Saving Private Ryan with Saving Tamp Teen Scene and The Brady Bunch with The Teen Scene Bunch.

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille even got an Oscar, his first.

The 45 youngsters have been at camp since June 18 and worked hard on Fridays program. All except three children participated and they were so excited, said Brenda Holloway, the camp supervisor. They loved performing for their families and for the mayor.

The children are differently abled in a variety of ways, mentally and physically. Most of them participate in therapeutic recreation programs throughout the year. During camp, they swam, enjoyed arts and crafts, took field trips, and worked on laptop computers. This years summer camp ends this week. The therapeutic recreation programs are part of the citys Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities.
