The Campagna Centers Wright to Read Program and the Womens Giving Circle of Alexandria have joined forces to provide 1,000 summer reading packsenough for all of the elementary students in The Campagna Centers programs. Distribution events are planned for the end of the month.
On Wednesday, May 28 from 4:00 until 4:45 pm, Campagna Center staff and Women’s Giving Circle members will deliver to James K. Polk ElementaryOn Thursday, May 29 from 3:00 until 3:45 pm the groups will deliver to Mount Vernon Elementary. After receiving their Summer Reading Packs, students will then have time to read outside.
The members of the Womens Giving Circle of Alexandria are very generous in their support of this project, said Wright to Read Program Director Leigh Hoyer. It is very rewarding to see volunteers preparing Summer Reading Packs to inspire summer reading in students in The Campagna Centers elementary programs.
2008 marked the second year that The Campagna Center and WGCA have collaborated on the Summer Reading Pack initiative. For the project, The Campagna Center and WGCA collected more than 3,000 new and gently used books. Book donations came from individual members of the WGCA as well as members who served as book captains and collected books at schools. Books-A-Million also supported the project by donating books.
Twelve adult volunteers and twelve middle school students from Burgundy Farm Middle School sorted the books and prepared the packs. Students were provided with the books packaged in red drawstring bags. All volunteers reported that their volunteer experience was worthwhile.
This project is rewarding for the volunteers who donate books and prepare the Summer Reading Packs, said Hoyer. And the students are delighted to receive books in a bright red drawstring bag, perfect for taking books on the go for summer. Preparing 1,000 packs this year is a great accomplishment.
Established in 1979 by the Frank & Betty Wright Foundation and administered by The Campagna Center, Wright to Read provides tutoring and mentoring services to approximately 75 elementary school students. Wright to Read strives to give the gift of literacy.
