Townhouse sales spike before tax credit deadline

As the April 30 deadline neared for the homebuyers tax credit, Northern Virginia housing sales for the month rose by 16.1 percent as compared to April 2009. A total of 1,793 homes were sold, according to the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors. At the same time, the median sales price fell by 9.3 percent to $390,000.

Townhouses led the field for both the City of Alexandria taken alone and the Northern Virginia area. Throughout the region, they rose by 22.3 percent to a total of 564 units sold. 

In Alexandria, townhouse sales rose by 44 percent, for a total of 62 units sold. They were followed by condos, with a 22 percent increase, to 96. Single-family home sales climbed by 13 percent, to 27.
At the same time, Alexandrias median sales price for condos dropped by 15 percent, to $262,950. Townhouses and single-family homes showed modest price gains, increasing by 4 and 6 percent respectively, to $529,000 and $660,000.
