The Associated Press declared Democratic nominee former Vice President Joe Biden the winner of Virginia at 7:31 p.m. on Election Day. AP also declared incumbent Sen. Mark Warner (D) and incumbent Congressman Don Beyer (D) the winners in their respective races shortly after polls closed.
In addition, Virginians voted to approve both constitutional amendments on the ballot: one that would establish a redistricting commission helmed by citizens and legislators and another that would make cars or pickup trucks owned by veterans with disabilities free from state and local taxes.
As predicted, the City of Alexandria voted majority Democratic.
In the presidential race, 80.40% of Alexandria’s vote went to Biden, 17.57% went to Republican nominee incumbent President Donald Trump, 1.2% went to Libertarian candidate Jo Jorgensen and 0.82% went to write-in candidates, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. Statewide, 53.64% of Virginia’s vote went to Biden and 44.49% went to Trump, with 99.81% of precincts reporting as of Wednesday afternoon.
In the contest for the Senate, 79.47% of Alexandria’s votes went to Warner, 20.40% went to challenger Daniel Gade (R) and 0.13% went to write-in candidates, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.
In the race to represent Virginia’s eighth district in the U.S. House of Representatives, 78.86% of Alexandria’s vote went to Beyer, 20.87% went to challenger Jeff Jordan (R) and 0.27% went to write-in candidates, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.
Alexandrians voted 60.61% in favor of the redistricting amendment and 80.19% in favor of the amendment for veteran vehicle tax exemption, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.
Alexandria voter turnout reports indicate that 62.14% of registered voters in Alexandria voted early, either in person or by mail. Early voting opened on Sept. 18. In the 2016 election, 26.2% of voters voted absentee. In 2012, 21.9% voted absentee.
