The Alexandria Health Department organized two free flu shot clinics on Sept. 26, administering 1,802 vaccinations, according to a news release.

The free walk-in clinics, stationed at Francis C. Hammond Middle School and T.C. Williams High School, provided vaccines to 962 residents and 840 residents, respectively. AHD’s medical reserve corps volunteers and city staff supported the clinics, according to the release.

The city urges residents to get the flu vaccine this year, particularly because the influenza virus and COVID-19 share many symptoms, including fever, cough, shortness of breath and fatigue.

Residents who were unable to participate in the free clinic event, especially those over the age of 65 who require a higher-dose vaccine, are encouraged to contact a local pharmacy, urgent care clinic or healthcare provider, according to the release.

Lyft is offering assistance to those in need of transportation to get a flu vaccine in the form of ride credits.
