The George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee announced Sunday afternoon the cancellation of a raft of events for Presidents Day in the city, including the George Washington Birthday Parade.

The committee said in a statement on its website that due to the possibility of snow, sleet and freezing rain starting late Sunday and continuing into Monday, it was a “common sense” decision.

The forecast currently is for a 90 percent chance of precipitation including snow overnight, sleet as the parade begins at 1 p.m. and freezing rain as units headed home.

Several other events for Monday were cancelled: the Tomb Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House scheduled for 11 a.m.; The Armed Forces Community Covenant Ceremony at the Parade Reviewing Stand scheduled for 12:30 p.m.; and Open Houses at Historic Alexandria Sites.

Earlier Sunday, the George Washington Birthday Classic 10K race and 2K fun run in the Eisenhower Valley and the Revolutionary War Reenactment at Fort Ward Park both fell victim to the weather.
