RICHMOND — Members of the Westfield High School football team received plenty of cheers from the crowd as they topped off their perfect season by winning the AAA Virginia High School League state championship Dec. 8 — but now they are receiving praise of a different kind.

The House and Senate have approved a joint resolution to commend the Westfield High School Bulldogs for their outstanding 2007 season and their state title.

The resolution was sponsored by Sen. Ken T. Cuccinelli, R-Fairfax. It requires the Senate clerk to prepare a copy of the resolution for presentation to head coach Tom Verbanic, representative of the Westfield High Bulldogs. The resolution acts as an expression of the General Assemblys admiration for the teams performance.

The team defeated the Woodbridge High School Vikings 42-14 in the championship game. The two teams traded touchdowns early in the third quarter and were tied at 14 before the Bulldogs scored four unanswered touchdowns.

Westfields season is thought to be the first time in Virginia High School League history that a team has gone 15-0.

Bulldogs quarterback Mike Glennon rushed 35 times for 190 yards and completed 14 of 23 passes for 152 yards. Glennon will continue his football career at North Carolina State.

Westfield High School senior running backs Brian Kennedy and Steve Tabot each scored on short passes. Senior linebacker Kyle Gofredo intercepted a Vikings pass for a touchdown, and sophomore running back Dylan Doty scored on a 12-yard run with a minute left in the game.

This is the second state title in five years for the Bulldogs. Westfield won its first Virginia AAA Football Championship in 2003.
