The Alexandria Police Department announced Wednesday it has charged a suspect in connection with the homicide of Eduardo David Chandias Almendarez, who was found dead in Four Mile Run Park on December 4, 2015.

Edwin Alexander Guerreo Umana, 18, of Arlington, was charged with murder and is being held without bond.

Police spokeswoman Crystal Nosal said that while the arrests were announced on the same day, the two homicides were not connected. She said that the murder in Beverley Park was carried out by suspects affiliated with a gang, but said it was not gang-motivated. Nosal said the homicide in Four Mile Run Park was gang motivated, and was for the “furtherance of gang activities.” She declined to name the gang.

The Alexandria Police Department announced Wednesday that a 17-year-old male has been charged in connection with the homicide of Jose Luis Ferman Perez, who was found dead in Beverley Park at the intersection of N. Overlook Drive and S. Overlook Drive on November 9, 2015.

Two other suspects related to this homicide are in custody, although they have not been charged. Police spokeswoman Crystal Nosal had no further details on the investigation.

“This heinous crime shocked the community and made many people worry for their safety and the safety of their children,” said Police Chief Earl Cook in a statement. “I am pleased to say that this challenging homicide investigation is drawing to a close. I credit not only our detectives for their determination and hard work but thank the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Homeland Security Investigations for their assistance over the course of the investigation.”
