More than 600 people, including business, civic and political leaders, turned out on the morning before Thanksgiving for the 5th Annual Mayors Unity Breakfast.

Hosted by Mayor Bill Euille at the Mark Center Hilton, the gathering focused on the theme of community service and included speakers Dr. Morton Sherman, the superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools, and Chief of Police David Baker.

Sherman, in his first year at the helm of ACPS, said, Students can learn about service if we as adults model it for them.

He went on to suggest, Perhaps we need to add a fourth R, to the basic three of reading, writing and arithmetic. We need to add a fourth for responsibility. This is not about remembering the Titans, it is about imagining the Titans and what the next generation of our children will be like.
Chief Baker gave a passionate Charge to the City before Mayor Euille took his place behind the podium.

I am a believer that to whom much is given, much is expected, said Euille. When someone is without food, we are all hungry. When someone is without shelter, we are all homeless. When someone is without a job, we are all unemployed. And when someone is without clothes, we are all naked.

Noting the difficult economic times for the city, Euille went on to say, We are facing challenges but need to find ways to come together and work through this. Lets be thankful. Lets be helpful. Lets make a difference.
