Robert Driscoll, CEO of Mirant Potomac River, LLC, presented a check for $50,000 to the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria at T.C. Williams High School Wednesday. The check is the first of three installments, the company having committed to donate $150,000 over three years.
Every year hundreds of T.C. Williams High School seniors face graduation with the grades to go to college and the desire to go to college but without the money to go to college, said Joan M. Renner, chair of the Scholarship Fund. And thats where the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria comes in.
Established in 1986, The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria has provided financial aid, advising and scholarships to students and families in the Alexandria City Public Schools. Over the past 22 years, the Fund has awarded nearly $5.5 million in scholarships to 2,900 deserving students as they pursue their post secondary educational goals.
Mirant Potomac Generating Station on the Potomac River and the City of Alexandria were at odds over various environmental impacts and building permits until earlier this summer when the two parties settled much of their differences without state intervention.
One of our priorities as a corporate citizen is to give back to the community and particularly to the graduate scholarships in supporting the young people of our community, Driscoll said.
Mayor Bill Euille, Superintendent Morton Sherman, Director of the Scholarship Fund Susan Yowell and numerous trustees of the program were also in attendance.
We want to express our congratulations to Mirant for their corporate giving. said Mayor Bill Euille, a T.C. graduate. As many of us are acutely aware, the city and Mirant had some rocky patches for the past four or five years, but thank goodness cool minds prevailed and now were shaking hands.
