Del Ray resident Scott Gordon has become the first challenger to vie for an Alexandria City Council seat in 2012.

Gordon, 30, describes himself as a fiscally conservative moderate Republican who is “very liberal as far as a social agenda is concerned.”

“Alexandria is one of the more progressive and growing cities in the region and there needs to be a young, energetic, innovative point of view on the city council to help nurture that,” he said.

Though he said his platform is not entirely developed, Gordon wants to bring more budgetary oversight to council, promote small businesses, tourism and volunteerism, increase revenue by luring hotels to the city and add more government-subsidized housing to the city’s grid.

“Everyone should want to live in Alexandria and everyone should be able to live here,” he said.

Gordon has no prior political experience but is on the executive board of the Del Ray Citizens Association and a member of the Alexandria Sister Cities Committee. A financial services professional originally from northern New Jersey, he has lived in Alexandria for about 10 years with his wife, Jennie, a civil servant for Arlington County. They have a 1-year-old daughter, Elinore.

Next year’s municipal elections will take place in November for the first time since council shifted them from May.
