Our original story follows below:
An unidentified man went on an unpaid shopping spree at a local supermarket after hiding in a storage room until the store closed.
Surveillance cameras caught the suspect, a black man, walking through the empty Giant Supermarket store in 400 block of East Monroe Ave., filling his backpack with groceries around midnight on September 27. He later left using a back door, police said.
An interior alarm was set off, but the company did not call authorities, said department spokesman Jody Donaldson. A manager noticed the thefts the next morning. He reviewed the tape after learning the alarm had gone off in the night, Donaldson said.
Police described the suspect as 5-foot-10, 160 to 190 pounds, with short hair, light complexion and a full beard. He wore blue jeans and a green jacket, authorities said.
