Alexandria’s Uptown/Parker-Gray neighborhood officially became part of the National Register of Historic Places, a city spokesperson announced last week. The distinction makes official what has been known for years about the historically significant neighborhood.
Located in north Old Town with the approximate boundaries from Cameron Street up to First Street, and North Columbus streets to Buchanan and North West streets, the district is now recognized nationally because of its historic, architectural or archeological significance based on national standards used by every state.
The designation recognizes the historic architecture of the district and social history of the Uptown/Parker-Gray Historic District, including the African American contribution that has occurred in this neighborhood since its inclusion within the City of Alexandria’s boundaries in the 1790s.
“The City of Alexandria is excited to have the National Park Service accept the Parker-Gray Historic District as a National Register District after many years of work by the community,” said Mayor Bill Euille. “This nomination documents the history of the neighborhood and African American heritage for present and future generations. It will also enable owners of eligible property in the district to benefit from federal and state tax credit programs when restoring their historic buildings.”
The listing identifies nearly a thousand contributing historic structures within the Uptown/Parker-Gray Historic District.
