The city has enacted new parking restrictions for the 100 block of Duke Street and the 200 block of South Lee Street as part of a pilot program approved in November 2016.

The restrictions, similar to those enacted on the 100 block of Prince Street, require anyone without a District 1 residential parking permit to pay to park on the street for up to two hours, according to a news release from the city.

The release said new signage has been installed that notes the requirement to pay, the hours and days of the parking restriction and options for payment.

The new restrictions are part of the Residential Pay by Phone pilot program, which was approved by council last year. The pilot program aims to provide adequate amounts of on-street parking for residents through incentivizing non-residents to park in metered or garage spaces by eliminating free two-hour parking.

The release said the effectiveness of the restrictions will be evaluated by city staff before and after to see if it’s something that can be expanded to other areas.

The new restrictions are happening alongside a number of conversations about parking in Alexandria’s most congested areas, including Old Town and Del Ray. The city recently hosted an open house concerning proposed changes to its parking standards.
