A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a car in Old Town on Tuesday morning.
Officers from the Alexandria Police Department responded to the 100 block of S. Fairfax St. at about 10:10 a.m. after reports of the fatal collision. The police’s initial investigation indicates a 92-year-old man was attempting to park in a parking lot when he backed into a 49-year-old parking attendant.
After striking the attendant, the driver abruptly accelerated forward, driving into Swift Alley and striking another pedestrian, a 44-year-old man. The driver remained on the scene.
Deputy Chief David Huchler said the parking attendant was treated at the scene with minor injuries, but the worker died. He was later identified as Jeremais Herrera Rodriguez of Alexandria. The investigation is ongoing.
“From our preliminary investigation, it does not appear to be malicious or that there was any intent to hit the pedestrians,” Huchler said.
Members of the police’s crash reconstruction team are investigating the incident. Alexandria Police ask that witnesses or people with information regarding this incident contact Investigator Diana Barrett at 703-746-6873.
