Alexandria city officials Tuesday afternoon announced David P. Baker’s resignation as the Chief of Police. Baker’s decision puts an end to a city investigation into the accident and discussions as to whether he should be allowed to keep his job as head of the city’s police department.

Three days ago, Arlington County Police arrested Baker and charged him with a DUI following a car accident in which Baker, driving an unmarked city vehicle, hit another automobile on an I-66 entrance ramp. Upon being taken into custody, Baker recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.19, more than twice Virginia’s legal limit of 0.08.

Baker’s resignation means that his nearly 20-year career in Alexandria law enforcement will officially come to an end this Friday. The current Acting Chief of Police Earl Cook, until this week Baker’s top deputy, will remain in the position “until further notice,” city officials said.
