Simon Bahta Asfeha has been missing since Sunday, when police found his 3-year-old daughter and her mother dead in their South Reynolds Street apartment.

Police identified the woman, who court records show was once in a custody battle with the suspect, as 27-year-old Seble Tessema.

A neighbor called the police Sunday morning after hearing noises coming from the apartment. Officers arrived at a traumatic scene where both Tessema and her child were found with what appeared to be stab wounds in their necks, Alexandria Police spokesman Jody Donaldson said.

Asfeha, 34, was believed to be driving a silver Acura with Virginia tags XKS-1522, though police said the car is no longer a major focus of the investigation because so much time has lapsed.

[Asfeha and Tessema] have lived here a while, so we know that they know people in the area, Donaldson said. Were just hoping that hes reached out to somebody and they know where hes staying and that they do whats right and give us a call and get this guy in custody.

Court records reveal that Asfeha has been convicted of four crimes in Alexandria since 1999. One resulted in a protective order that kept him from contacting his daughter and awarded temporary custody to Tessema, which he violated in 2007.

Asfeha went by Simon Bahta at one point, according to court records.

The homicides represent the citys first two of the year.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Section of the Alexandria Police Department at 703-838-4444 or the Crime Solvers tip line at 703-838-4858. Witnesses can remain anonymous.
