City police officers will join their comrades across the commonwealth in toting the Flame of Hope, the Special Olympics Virginia torch, through Alexandria Thursday.
Members of the Alexandria Police Department will escort the flame from the Washington Sailing Marina to Jones Point, a nearly four mile leg of the torchs more than 1,900 mile trip around Virginia.
The journey, known as the Law Enforcement Torch Run, comes to a finish in Richmond just in time to kick off the summer games June 10.
Local police departments, sheriffs offices and correctional facilities, among other law enforcement agencies, have partnered with the Special Olympics since 1986, officials said.
