Alexandria remains under the state of emergency resulting from the weekend storm, and more winter weather approaches the city and region. A winter storm warning from the National Weather Service, which predicts 10 to 20 inches of new snow accumulation, is in effect from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday evening. Be prepared for the storms fallout.
Plowing
The city and its residents have both reported that many streets have not been plowed. According to city sources, it will be several days before residential streets improve, particularly with more snow in the forecast.
About 521 lane miles of roadways and 20 miles of sidewalks and pathways fall under the citys responsibility. Residents can click here to report primary and secondary streets that need attention from plows, however, the citys plows and contractors operate based on a predetermined list that prioritizes streets.
Power outages
The weather has caused several downed trees and power outages across the city. Dominion Power is working to restore service to customers, not the city, so officials are urging that residents call Dominion toll free at 888-667-3000 if they experience a power outage.
However, if you observe a fallen power line, report it to the citys snow emergency hotline at 703-746-4488, and do not approach it yourself.
Warming centers and hypothermia shelters
The Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.) and William Ramsay Recreation Center (5650 Sanger Ave.) have opened as warming locations for residents until further notice. Residents are encouraged to bring all necessities, such as food, water and other personal items, with them. For more information, contact the snow emergency hotline at 703-746-4488.
All hypothermia and overflow shelters are operating around the clock. Alexandria shelters include the following: Alexandria Community Shelter (2355-B Mill Rd., 703-746-3660) and Carpenter’s Shelter (930 N. Henry St., 703-548-7500).
