Alexandria Country Day School officials announced Tuesday that an anonymous donor has presented the school with a $3 million gift, the largest in the school’s 31-year history.

The financial windfall will go toward improving the private school’s curriculum and instruction as well as physical improvements to the organization’s campus. A portion of the gift also will be deposited in the school’s endowment, officials said.

“This tremendously generous gift presents an unparalleled opportunity for our school,” said Scott Baytosh, head of school. “It speaks volumes about the kind of learning institution that we are and is indicative of the kind of passion and commitment our community shares about our school.”

In its efforts to improve instruction, the school will use a portion of the donation to expand its science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs. Other dollars will be spent on an initiative that outfits students with iPads.

Officials also plan to renovate classrooms and the library, as well as add an artificial turf play field to the campus.
