City prosecutors said Thursday that they are dropping the rape charge in the case against an Alexandria sheriff’s deputy accused of having sex with an inmate at the city jail.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter confirmed the decision, but declined to elaborate on incident, citing other pending charges against former Deputy Bryant Pegues, 52, of Oxon Hill. Pegues was arrested and subsequently fired last month after an inmate of the city jail reported that she was raped to another deputy at the facility.
“Yes, the forcible rape charge was technically null prossed based on our motion, with the agreement of the defense,” Porter said. “He’s still charged with the felony, carnal knowledge of an inmate and he’s still being held in the Arlington Jail. The [preliminary] hearing is still July 9, so we’re still moving forward with that.”
The new development casts a new shroud of uncertainty over an incident where already few details were made available by law enforcement officials.
