Thumbs Down to the city and merchants for ignoring the flower boxes in Old Town along King Street. For a city that relies so heavily on tourism, barren flowers boxes are not a welcoming site. Stroll in front of the Hotel Monaco for an example of civic pride.

Thumbs Up to Lyles-Crouch students for their first-place finish in a plastic-bag recycling contest that began back in September. The Lyles-Crouch elementary students collected the most bags of any school in the city, netting $1,500 for their school. What a perfect activity to conclude in the midst of Alexandria’s Earth Day and Spring for Alexandria festivities.

Thumbs Up to all the community volunteers and organizations who will be working around the city on Friday to give back to our community. Thanks for your extra effort and hard work.

Thumbs Up to all of the volunteers who helped make Alexandria’s annual House and Garden Tour a resounding success last week. The event, hosted by the Hunting Creek Garden Club and the Garden Club of Alexandria, raises funds to support restoration of historic gardens and landmarks throughout Virginia. As usual, the houses on tour were stunning.
