While much of the city will see Del. Adam Ebbin (D-49), City Councilman Rob Krupicka or Arlington school board member Libby Garvey on their ballots come November, voters in Alexandrias southwest quadrant will find a few new names at the polling station.

Though former 30th District state Senator Patsy Ticer and Sen. Dick Saslaw (D-35) have long split the city, Alexandria now makes up 18 percent of District 39, following the once-in-a-decade redistricting process.

Elected in 2007, Sen. George Barker, a Democrat, will have to wait until after August to see which Republican will challenge his bid for another term.

Miller Baker, a constitutional lawyer by trade, is vying with George Mason University professor Scott Martin and special education assistant and Democratic Republic of Congo native Andre Muange for a shot at Barkers seat.

All three are calling for a mix of tax cuts, spending reductions, transportation improvements and education reform. Though pundits have already declared the next election cycle will be a referendum on the economy, Baker, Martin and Muange have embraced traditional family values, making mention of their opposition to abortion and support of the second amendment.
