Cyclists and pedestrians streamed across the newly opened Woodrow Wilson Bridge trail last Saturday, jumping at the first opportunity to cross the Potomac River along the pedestrian span.

The bike-pedestrian trail is one of the final stages of the decade-long bridge project carrying a roughly $2.5 billion price tag. The new Wilson Bridges 12 automobile lanes have been open since December 2008, but the 12-foot wide, 1.1 mile-long pedestrian trail took a little longer to wrap up.

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, Prince Georges County Executive Jack Johnson and other federal, state and local officials were among the first to utilize the new river crossing after a ceremony on the Maryland side of the river. At 1 p.m., a host of Alexandrians took their turn en masse, in conjunction with the grand opening of Bike and Rolls new Old Town location, where officials cut the ribbon in celebration (above).
