Next Thursday kicks off the annual Spring for Alexandria weekend, which brings together business, government, nonprofit organizations and individuals to honor the city’s philanthropic tradition and increase upon it.
A collaboration of Volunteer Alexandria, the city government, ACT for Alexandria, Kids Helping Kids and the Alexandria Jaycees, the weekend features the Annual Business Philanthropy Summit, the Community Service Day and the celebration at Market Square.

The Motley Fool and A Show of Hands will be recognized as business philanthropists of the year while Ken Naser, executive director of ALIVE!, is Volunteer Alexandria’s nonprofit leader of the year. Lee Fifer, who has been on the Carpenter’s Shelter board of directors for 12 years and contributed to other nonprofits during his lifelong city residency, will be recognized as the nonprofit board leader of the year.

Third Annual Community Day of Service
Teams from businesses, organizations and associations will join city employees and individual volunteers to spend Friday, April 30, providing hands-on service at nonprofit organizations and city agencies throughout Alexandria from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The work also supports Volunteer Alexandria year-round by collecting pledges from friends and supporters.
Just as in a walkathon, Volunteer Alexandria asks each volunteer to raise a minimum of $50 in pledges to cover costs of the day. All pledge donations are tax deductible. Proceeds will benefit Volunteer Alexandria’s efforts to provide volunteers to nonprofits and city agencies throughout the year.
Volunteers who raise more than that are eligible for prizes. The deadline to enter your online and off-line donations to be considered for prizes is 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 29.Visit www.springforalexandria.org to register.
Market Square Celebration
The Service Day concludes with volunteers, sponsors, city officials and the nonprofits served gathering on Market Square in Old Town. This celebration, with good food and fellowship, recognizes the commitment of service and giving to the Alexandria community.
