The Island on Duke street is back.  Mango Mike’s, a caribbean restaurant located on the West End, has finished their annual tropical spring planting.  Every year the staff receives a tractor trailer of tropical palms, Banana trees and other tropical plants from Florida.

The crew, led by owner Mike Anderson, recently finished up a full week of planting giant 25 ft queen palms and hauling eight tons of pure white sand to make the exterior and outside dinning area look and feel like a tropical Island resort.

The planting has become somewhat of a tradition for Mike. He looks forward to it every May, mainly because it marks the beginning of the busy deck season.

This year’s planting is one of the largest both in terms of size and number of trees.  “It gives the building a whole different look for commuters driving down Duke Street in rush hour traffic,” said Bill Blackburn, Mango Mike’s general manager, “as well as the guests who are escaping their hectic lives with a frozen drink on the tropical deck.”
