Despite being one of five teams to beat T.C. Williams during the regular season, Phoebus couldn’t stop the Titans from moving to the Virginia AAA State tournament semifinals.
The 21-9 Phantoms fell 58-51 in the first round of the tournament, sending the 25-5 Titans, ranked 13th in the state by CBS Sports, to face L.C. Bird at the Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center in Richmond.
Although a late game resurgence nearly tipped the game in Phoebus’ favor, T.C.’s penchant for slamming the door shut on opponents in the fourth quarter emerged yet again. They made good on a non-conference 48-41 loss to the Phantoms in January and sent Phoebus packing early.
The Titans are now a single game away from a chance at a state championship. To get that far, they’ll have to beat the 24-3 Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks, ranked 17th in the state, on March 9.
