Two games into the season, T.C. Williams High School volleyballs new head coach Michael Burch likes the way his team is clicking together.

This is Burchs first year as skipper of T.C.s volleyball squad, coming to Alexandria after 14 years coaching at the college level. While the Titans have split the first games of the season a 0-3 loss to Chantilly High School and 3-0 win against Falls Church High School Burch said the team is working hard toward Novembers district tournament.

We still have two more months to learn everything were teaching, he said. Were learning a lot and having fun in practice. Theres a lot more energy. That one loss is not going to hurt us.

Burch is changing the way Titans volleyball works. Varsity, junior varsity and freshmen players are practicing together. Position coaches are instructing players at all levels, rather than sticking to just the varsity or junior varsity squads, the coach said.

The shift is giving Burch more control over the program and fostering younger players for the next level. For now, hes looking at seniors Abby Wilson and Natalie Brown and sophomore Kate Whitmire to lead the Titans toward success in November.
