After five years with Alexandria City Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Margaret Byess tendered her resignation Friday.

She parts ways with the district effective May 25 and is the latest top ACPS staffer to depart the school system. Officials aren’t saying what prompted the resignation and a district spokeswoman did not immediately return press calls.

Jean Sina, ACPS’ chief financial officer, stepped down earlier this year for what officials described as a new professional opportunity. Stephen Wilkins, tapped by Superintendent Morton Sherman to guide the T.C. Williams transformation and later appointed as the Jefferson-Houston’s chief executive officer, left for a new post in Georgia in February.

Byess heads the district’s human resources, school nutrition services and facilities operations. She also oversees the educational facilities department, which came under fire late last year for financial mismanagement.

One member of the department has resigned and another was placed on administrative leave after Sherman learned staff members intentionally flouted internal policies while shifting money between capital projects.
