Alexandria’s annual Thanksgiving race, the Turkey Trot, has been restructured in response to COVID-19, according to a news release.

The race will take place “virtually” this year, meaning participants can complete a five-mile run or walk at the location of their choosing between Nov. 21 and Nov. 29 and log their time online, according to the release. Participants can register for the race at www.alexandriaturkeytrot.com.

The Turkey Trot is a 45-year tradition in the city and a major fundraiser and food driver for local nonprofit ALIVE! In 2019, the race raised more than $6,000 and 2,000 pounds of food for the non-profit, according to the release. This year, people can donate nonperishable food between Nov. 21 and 29 at locations around Del Ray, including The Dog Store, 2301 Mt. Vernon Ave. and Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza and Tap, 401 E. Braddock Road.
