Alexandria police are investigating a Wednesday morning shooting on the West End that left two men hospitalized.

Just before 7 a.m., a 35-year-old man was shot multiple times at a home on the 5400 block of Holmes Run Parkway, police said. The victim, a former resident of the home, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday.

A second man, 23, suffered a gunshot wound to his hand and was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital.

Lt. Mark Bergin, a police spokesman, said the 35-year-old victim was visiting his former home to pick up personal items from his estranged wife, who still resides there. Investigators believe the 23-year-old fired all of the shots in the incident, using a handgun that was recovered at the scene.

Jon Metelits, 60, who lives around the corner from where the shooting occurred but did not know the victim or his wife, said he was in his home shaving when he heard “four or five” gunshots. By the time he was dressed and stepped outside, he said he saw an officer arresting a suspect in the middle of the street.

“I came out and I saw a motorcycle police offer already had the guy in cuffs,” Metelits said. “Then later I saw a person wheeled out on a stretcher, and three young children came out too.”

Police are working to determine the suspect’s precise relationship to the victim and his wife, but described him as a “friend” of some kind.
