Bill Hanbury, president of the Washington region’s United Way chapter, awarded a check for more than $115,000 in grants for local charities and nonprofit organizations at City Hall Tuesday night.
“The contributions from the Alexandria community demonstrate a commitment to joining together to ensure that programs in education, health and financial stability can continue their essential work,” said Hanbury. “Each of the Community Impact Fund grants will have an immediate and positive impact on each of these vital organizations.”
The grants should help fill gaps government budgets cannot always fill, Hanbury said.
More than $1.75 million was raised through the nationwide campaign, chaired locally by City Councilman Frank Fannon. Last month, Alexandria city employees donated about $72,000 to United Way.
