Imaging Blackness, 1915-2002: Film Posters from the Indiana University Black Film Center/Archive is now open at the Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe St. This new exhibition features dozens of movie posters from a variety of black films, including westerns, musicals and dramas. Vintage posters represent the marketing of black entertainers who contradicted or strengthened stereotypes as they created a successful place for African Americans in film. At its 5th annual Wine & Chocolate Fundraiser on Saturday, March 8 from 5 pm to 8 pm at The Athenaeum, at 201 Prince St. Sample featured wines from The Curious Grape paired with fine Belgian chocolate and other delicious chocolate delights from Miriams Kitchen in Washington, DC. Bittersweet Catering will be providing their outstanding appetizers and the celebration cake. March 14
Renowned tonalist artist Kevin Fitzgerald will be featured in a solo exhibition of landscape paintings that glorify the Great Mid-Atlantic region. The exhibit will take place on Friday, March 14 from 6:30 to 9 pm at Principle Gallery, 208 King Street in Old Town. This exhibit will begin with a reception open to the public. The artist will be in attendance to meet with collectors and discuss the inspiration for his paintings.  All paintings on display will be available for purchase.

March 17
On Monday, March 17, Pittsburgh-based singer and songwriter Brad Yoder brings his guitar, saxophone and an eclectic mix of original pop-rock songs, along with Jason Rafalak on bass and mandolin, to Buzz, 901 Slaters Lane in Alexandria, at 8:00 p.m.  This show is free and open to all ages.  Call 703.600.BUZZ for more information.
 
Voted Best Acoustic/Solo Artist by readers of the Pittsburgh City Paper four out of the last five years, Brad Yoder logs over 150 performances annually, playing colleges, cafs, clubs, festivals, First Nights, and even the zoo.  Along the way, Brad has sold over 5,000 copies of four self-released CDs. 
 
Brad has opened for a diverse assortment of artists, including Tegan & Sara, the Cowboy Junkies, Robyn Hitchcock, Erin McKeown, Steve Forbert and Ellis Paul.  His songs have appeared on CBSs “NUMB3RS,” NPR’s “Car Talk,” a “Dawson’s Creek” season DVD, and as part of the Pittsburgh Regional History Centers 9-11 Memorial Exhibit.  Philip Harris of Pittsburgh Magazine notes that Brad Yoder rules the Pittsburgh coffeehouse scene.  Its Brads unique mix of humorous, poetic, political, funky and edgy original songs, covering a musical range from folk to indie rock (with unexpected musical and lyrical twists), that has earned him a loyal following ranging from kids in single digits through retirees.

Richard Martinez, associate professor, University of Minnesota, will present Immigration and American Cities: Opportunities and Challenges on Wednesday, March 26, 7 to 9 p.m., at Virginia Techs Alexandria Center, 1021 Prince Street, 3rd floor Conference Room. Martinez will review recent global and U.S. demographic trends, explain migration from a sociological perspective, and discuss implications for cities, emphasizing the controversy surrounding undocumented immigration and possible solutions. The presentation, free and open to the public, is the seventh in Virginia Techs 2007-2008 New Metropolis Lecture Series.
