Music at Twilight Concert
The Citys Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is
sponsoring the Alexandria Singers as part of its Music at Twilight Summer Concert Series. This free concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Fort Ward Park, 4301 W. Braddock Rd. Community Meeting on Proposed Pocket Park on East Del Ray Avenue
The public is invited to attend a community meeting to discuss the park
planning and design process for the property at 1 and 7 E. Del Ray Ave. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave. The property was acquired in January 2008 as part of the Citys Pocket Park Program. The purpose of the meeting is to gather input from the community about potential park elements that would support a passive, neighborhood use of the property. On the Road to Freedom BOOK DISCUSSION AND SIGNING Award-winning journalist Charles E. Cobb Jr., visits the Alexandria Black History Museum (902 Wythe St.) and takes an in-depth look at the civil rights movement with his new book, On the Road to Freedom. Cobbs book visits the placesincluding Alexandriawhere pioneers of the movement marched, sat-in at lunch counters, gathered in churches, risked arrest and in some cases, their lives. Cobb will talk about the documentation of historic markers, first-person interviews, speeches, maps and 150 black-and-white photos that make up this valuable and practical guide to Civil Rights history. All Hands on Deck! Carlyle House Historic Park
Explore life on the high seas during Carlyle Houses Hands-on-History Tent: All Hands on Deck! Children and their families are invited to explore Alexandrias maritime history through crafts and hands-on activities. A 30-foot scale model schooner, the Lion, will be on site to demonstrate rigging and signal flags.  For a fee, participants can build their own model sailboat and race it against others! Other activities include learning sea shanties, using a compass, designing a flag, writing with a quill pen and trying on colonial clothes. Lantern Tours Gadsbys Tavern Museum
After happy hour or dinner in Old Town, see the 18th century in a whole new light! Tour by candlelight with a costumed guide the historic tavern (c.1785) and City Hotel built in 1792 and see how guests experienced the site before the advent of electricity. Alexandrias 18th-century heritage comes to life on Sunday afternoons along the waterfront! Enjoy history-inspired performances on the docks by the Torpedo Factory. Meet and greet people from the past as students from McLean High Schools Project Enlightenment portray early Alexandria residents and travelers near the Waterfront and along lower King Street. Free! Mirant meeting
The City of Alexandria will hold a Mirant Community Monitoring Group (MCMG) meeting on Monday, June 30th at 7:30 pm in conference Room 1101 of City Hall at 301King Street in Alexandria.  At this meeting, MCMG will talk about the Citys current discussions and potential agreement with Mirant regarding its Potomac River Generating Station facility.  For more information regarding the MCMG meeting, please contact Khoa Tran or Lalit Sharma in the Office of Environmental Quality at 703.838.4334.

Now Enrolling Archaeology Summer Camp 2008
Young people ages 12 to 15 will discover Alexandrias history through
archaeology at this unique day camp. Assist professional archaeologists at a real excavation site, go on special field trips and more! Living Legends of Alexandria Exhibition
The Lyceum, 201 S. Washington St., is hosting Living Legends of Alexandria, which celebrates and documents individuals who have made remarkable contributions to the quality of life in Alexandria. Living Legends of Alexandria features photographs of 48 nominees by Nina Tisara with information about their contributions by Christa Watters. The Lyceum, Alexandrias History Museum, is open Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Drawings by William Lydston, Jr. Exhibition
The exhibition of Civil War artwork at Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site
(4301 W. Braddock Rd.) has been extended through the end of the year. Civil War drawings by soldier, artist and musician William Lydston, Jr., are featured in this exhibit with musical instruments and related objects as part of the statewide celebration of  Virginias musical heritage.
