To the editor:

I am writing to correct two grievous errors in the article by David Sachs entitled “At the junction of politics and history,” January 14.

First of all, the statue on South Washington Street does not depict General Robert E. Lee.  It is a representation of an anonymous Confederate foot soldier. It was erected in 1889 to honor the Confederate soldiers from Alexandria that died in the Civil War.

The second error concerns the history of the 1971 T.C. Williams High School State Championship football team.  The article incorrectly states that 1971 was the first year of integration.  But actually, the school was fully integrated when it opened in 1965, six years prior to 1971. George Washington High and Hammond High School were also integrated at that time.

The media seems to be making this mistake over and over again. Apparently, they are relying on that silly and historically inaccurate Disney farce of a movie Remember the Titans for their history lessons.
