To the editor,

As we approach the upcoming City Council and School Board elections, education is top-of-mind for many Alexandrians. Parents across our city are concerned as our schools face a shrinking budget, growing enrollment and possible service cuts. But as two parents who are active at Maury Elementary and MacArthur Elementary, were optimistic about the coming years. Among the reasons for our optimism are those City Council candidates who whole-heartedly support excellence in public education. In particular, wed like to recognize and urge people to vote for Councilman Justin Wilson. Justin has consistently supported Alexandrias schools by promoting a better environment for teachers, more resources for students and smaller class sizes, among other things. Hes also a good steward of our citys limited resources; Justin is someone who trains a careful eye on what we have and what we need, and he strives to bring the two closer together.

We appreciate that Justin recognizes that quality schools are our communitys moral obligation. He understands our school system and is ready to fight, not just for the basics, but also for those things that will make our school system great. And we agree with him that pursuing excellence in our schools should be among our communitys top priorities. With focused and dedicated leaders committed to continuing this pursuit, Alexandria will have a world-class school system.

The quality of a citys schools says a lot about its citizens and their priorities, and a city with good schools attracts more jobs and more opportunities for its residents. We hope youll make our schools a priority on May 5 and vote to re-elect Councilman Justin Wilson. Our city deserves someone who will continue to stand up for high-quality public education.
