To the editor:

Thanks for the Out of the Attic feature on the August 7, 1965, American Football League preseason game at the George Washington High School stadium featuring New York Jets rookie quarterback Joe Namath (“When ‘Broadway Joe’ came to town,” December 20).

But let me correct the information that was provided on 1965 high school graduate Skeeter Swift. It was stated that Swift played five years for the New Orleans Buccaneers. Swift did play five years of pro basketball in the American Basketball Association from 1969 to 1974, but he played with three different franchises in five different cities.

The New Orleans Buccaneers became the Memphis Pros. Swift spent his rookie season of 1969-70 in New Orleans. The following season he moved to Memphis, Ala. He then was traded to the Pittsburgh Condors for the 1971-72 season.

The league discontinued the franchise, and the players were available in a dispersal draft. Swift ended up with the Dallas Chaparrals for the 1972-73 season. The team then moved to San Antonio and became the Spurs. Swift spent the 1973-74 season there, and that was his final season of pro basketball.

A biography of Swift was published in 2011.

It is nice to reminisce about Alexandria during the ’60s. We had Joe Namath playing his first game in a New York Jets uniform and big-name rock groups appearing at the Alexandria Roller Rink. It was quite a time.
