Thumbs down to the some members of the Republican party, including former standard-bearer Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who suggested this week it was a “serious mistake” to have read the alleged NYC bomber (and U.S. Citizen), Faisal Shahzad, his Miranda rights.  It’s a serious mistake indeed when leaders of the opposition party are willing to shred the Constitution for the sake of political expediency.  Shame on you.  This week Glenn Beck finally got something right.

Thumbs down to the circumstances that led the Alexandria Red Cross to cancel its annual Waterfront Festival. For almost 30 years the festival has been a staple of summer in Old Town. While the Red Cross’ decision to drop the festival is understandable its intent was to raise funds and it has fallen short in that department for several years the festival’s departure is a loss for our city.

Thumbs up to the Alexandria City Council members for setting aside partisan differences to craft a reasonable budget compromise under very difficult circumstances. Even though Frank Fannon and Alicia Hughes could not vote for the budget passed Monday night, their input and advice are apparent in the final product.

Thumbs up to Rebuilding Together Alexandria for its many years of service in Alexandria. This year alone, at its April 24 service day, Rebuilding Together had more than 900 volunteers helping residents in need throughout the city. Thank you!
