Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. As the Baby Boomer Generation begins to retire, now is the time for young people to accept the leadership bestowed upon us. Civic associations and community groups are often at the heart of vital services provided to localities and are a great way to make a difference.

I was at the Young Democrats of Alexandria general membership meeting on February 15 at Los Toltecos Restaurant on Duke Street. It was a great way to engage in the community on so many levels.  The restaurant is a thriving business on the west side of Alexandria and had a packed house for trivia night. Amidst our discussion of politics and policy, there was a very competitive game of Trivia throughout the restaurant.

Whatever your political persuasion, I urge the young residents of Alexandria to get involved with civic association and community groups, especially those that support and strengthen our business community.
