To the editor:

Moderate and conservative voters are aware of the accumulated negative impacts of one-party “progressive” rule in Alexandria. For us, there is an opportunity this year to vote strategically to elect some non-Democrats to City Council.

Rules allow casting up to six votes for the six Alexandria City Council seats and there will be nine candidates on the ballot. Please consider the following: By concentrating your votes on a smaller number of candidates, it mathematically increases the odds that your preferred candidates will be one of the top six vote-getters who win a seat on City Council.

Do your homework, pick your favorite candidate or candidates, then vote for them and no more. It is possible that the winners will be decided by a handful of votes, so don’t dilute your support for your favorites by using all six votes in support of some other candidates you don’t really want.

As an example, I’ll cast only one vote in the City Council race and it will be for Darryl Nirenberg. I want his voice and common sense helping to lead our city and address the quality-of-life issues that are currently being ignored. The Democrats will surely maintain the majority on City Council, but let’s have some political diversity.
